Hand Drawn Photogravure Print with Chine Colle and Gilding

A love of Line is common among many printmakers and Lines are phenomena in themselves.  They are really there, in us and around us.  They are all around us and the study of both people and things is to study the lines they are made of.

In common with visual arts, walking, weaving, storytelling, music and writing all proceed along lines. In Tim Ingold’s book ‘Lines’ he imagines a world in which everyone and everything consists of of interwoven and interconnected lines.

However, in modern societies straightness has come to epitomise not only rational thought and disputation but also the values of civility and moral rectitude.

Pier Under is an Intaglio Etching plate made by exposing a drawing of the underside of Brighton Pier onto a light-sensitive photopolymer plate.  Here man-made lines compete with nature’s straight line of the horizon, enhanced by chine collé and silver gilding.
