HYBRID PRINTS

These Hybrid Prints are made using a method of mixing a traditional photogravure etching onto a base of colour made with a painted pattern using Wild Ink made in the studio.

Das Heimlich

This larger, framed print called Das Heimlich was produced during the 2020 lockdown due to Coronavirus.

The word is German and translates as a sort of cosy home – the opposite of the Freudian concept of the Uncanny and evokes a place of safely and the memory of being safe and protected.  This psychological concept mixed with the heightened awareness of nature all around me and the potential beauty of the coloured inks that can be produced in the studio.

Ink is colour plus liquid.  It can be created by breaking down colour-rich base materials (called pigment, dyestuff, or tint) in a liquid (usually water), either by boiling or fermenting.  Alternatively, the base materials can be ground into a powder and then mixed with a liquid.

Vehicle: the liquid in which the pigment is suspended.  Usually water but might be oil, gel or alcohol.

Binder: a substance that acts as a kind of glue to bind liquid to colour.  Gum Arabic is very effective.

Additive; this can be made with salt, vinegar or metals that intensify the ink or make it more permanent, and thickeners that change an ink’s consistency.  You can use a preservative like a whole clove to keep the ink from moulding.
