A Community Photographic Project        –

In 2005 Sheila de Rosa  devised and organised a community photographic project, ‘A Day in the Life of Grovehill’ which involved students at the Astley Cooper School, the local community of Grovehill and a lead artist. The scheme involved all participants being sent a single-use camera and a brief, to take a photograph every hour on the hour throughout a specified day, so that participants effectively took photographs simultaneously.  The photographs documented a day in their lives – Saturday 15th October 2005.

Once all the films were developed, the students and the lead artist pasted the conventional 6 x 4” photographs side by side onto long black strips of paper in a continuous strip and incorporated the participant’s names and statements.  The resultant photo-stories (displayed at The Paper Trail, Apsley from 8 – 12th November 2005) illustrated the shared and diverse experiences of people of various ages, backgrounds & occupations and highlighted the local community. This project provided valuable work experience and creative development to the artist and students, the community felt empowered to be actively involved in a neighbourhood project and it benefited the school which had just received Specialist Arts Status and presented a visualization of human behaviour.

DITLOG received funding from Astley Cooper School, The Grovehill Community, The Paper Trail, Apsley,                      Herts County Council, Dacorum Community Trust, Kodak & Boots
