ABOUT FACE : I – VII
About Face VIII – Hand Drawn Solar Plate Relief Print – 20 x 27 cms – February 2012 –
In the fertile chaos and proliferation of our image-saturated culture and against a back-drop of the media’s obsession with unattainable male & female beauty, these ‘photo-drawings’ aim to reassert the beauty of the well-worn human face and the marks made on it by full and eventful lives.
Hovering between drawing and photography the ‘photo-drawings’ subvert the idea of the photograph’s ability to present reality. These images rework photographic sources in a new-take on the notion of the postmodern copy. Their power lies in that they cannot or will not allow themselves to be fully grasped; they look like drawings rendered in lines, dots and squiggles but ‘photoshop’ filters remain as the palimpsest beneath these marks.
